Station Break Over the Holidays

Hello Friends:

The Enlighten Radio network will be broadcasting sporadically through the Holidays, as major technical and programming upgrade is in progress.

Storytelling with Fanny and Stas, Recovery Radio, and the Moose Turd Cafe, and Resistance Radio will broadcast at their regular times, barring unexpected technical issues,  but some slots may include replays of earlier broadcasts.

When we return, a brand new programmable Automation system will be installed and a new calendar for 2018.

cheers, hope we all see the grass in Spring, if it ever comes --- recall that Groundhog Day CAN last forever, or until human perfection is achieved.

John

Holiday Music Starts Today -- 24/7

I can't promise that the music will all be TRADITIONAL, but Christmas, for example, has conflicted meanings for a divided nation.

In case Xmas music is too saccharine for you, the Moose Turd Cafe, every weekday morn, or most of them, anyway, will help make EVERYTHING ELSE SEEM SO SWEET!

West Virginians say 'no thanks' to GOP tax bill -- Nov. 29

Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017

8:00 am -- As Congress moves closer to a possible vote on the GOP's so-called "tax reform," two West Virginia financial and policy analysts will share their thoughts on why the bill must be killed.  Kat Stoll, an economic consultant affiliated with West Virginia Together for Medicaid, and Ted Boettner, Executive Director of the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, are among representatives of a dozen WV organizations -- health care, family and education advocates; church groups; policy analysts; civil rights and labor organizations -- that have united in a common cause: to tell Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) "No thanks!" to the tax bill. It "would increase the country's deficits by giving away massive tax cuts to wealthy individuals and corporations, while giving families, students, people in recovery, and small business owners even less to be thankful for in the coming years," they say in a statement. More details are available at  https://www.facebook.com/events/162919361109635/   Please urge your family and friends to check out these figures and call their senators, telling them to definitely vote  NO

'Modern-day slavery' -- Nov. 15

Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017

7:30 am -- It's the brutal and sometimes deadly trafficking of human beings, most exploited for sex and labor -- what some activists call "modern-day slavery." We'll speak with two seemingly very committed people fighting it in the Eastern Panhandle and other parts of West Virginia -- Rita Nieman, of the Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, in Shepherdstown, and Penny Kay Hoeflinger, founder of an organization that runs a site where young people "can heal from the trauma they endured while at the hands of a trafficker." They're
reaching out to the young being trafficked in schools as well as to adults. Among the latest projects: a recent teach-in at Shepherd University and the proposed funding and training  of some 70 emergency phone counselors for use throughout West Virginia. It'll hopefully result in more effective participation by the state in a hot line run by the National Human Trafficking Resource Center.

Middle class tax benefits would drop over time, rise for the 1%, says analysis -- Nov. 8

Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017

8:00 am -- Alan Essig, Executive Director of the DC-based Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), will discuss his group's analysis of the GOP's so-called "tax reform" and jobs bill -- thoughtless legislation designed to lose  many of its tax benefits for the middle class over a period of time, according to ITEP.

It's another thing, of course, for the rich. The bill would provide "significant savings to foreign investors" and, of those tax cuts that would benefit Americans, "nearly a third would go to the richest one percent in 2018, and by 2027 that fraction would rise to nearly half," ITEP, a non-profit, non-partisan research organization reported Monday. Richest Americans Benefit Most from The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act  "Some of the provisions in the House bill that benefit the middle-class -- like lower tax rates and fewer brackets, an increased standard deduction, and a $300 tax credit for each adult in a household -- are designed to expire or become less generous over time," said the report. And for the wealthy? Some provisions "become more generous over time," according to ITEP.

How might the tax legislation effect West Virginia ?  What do we do about the 1 percent's offshoring of much of its $$$   "Paradise Papers,"    Paradise Papers Underscore Why Lawmakers Should Focus on Offshore Tax Avoidance  ?    Hopefully we'll get a chance to discuss those as well.

You can join the conversation by calling The Winners and Losers Radio Show at 304-278-4113.

Who are my neighbors? Reach out and build trust -- Nov. 1

Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017

8:00 am -- We'll speak with a spiritual leader of the Islamic Society of Western Maryland, Imam Faruq Post, about efforts by him and other interfaith leaders to build trust among people of differing faiths. What might be some of the more effective ways to fight hate -- moving beyond stereotypes (read all Muslims are "terrorists") -- in this age of polarization and fear? One method mentioned at an interfaith gathering at a Christian church near Shepherdstown last week is by reaching out to meet and serve neighbors who are diverse -- ethnically, socio-economically or in their religious beliefs -- by becoming actively involved as a volunteer in community organizations. And talk about your differences, said Imam Post  < http://iswmd.org > and Joel Rainey, Ph.D., lead pastor of Covenant Church < www.covenantexperience.com >, which hosted the gathering. "Disagreement is fine," said Rainey. "In fact, disagreement is to be expected." But disrespect, he added, "is never okay."

Engaging the public to fight science deniers -- Oct. 25

Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017

8:00 am -- How might literature, history, and other humanities be used to educate and engage the general public in the science of the environmental crisis? Keith Alexander, Ph.D., of Shepherd University's History Department, will discuss plans for a new biennial symposium, Humanities in the 21st Century, on which Shepherd and the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) are collaborating. The initial two-day session later this week, titled Humanities and the Environment, will bring together writers, historians, filmmakers, and scientists to discuss the role of the humanities in educating general audiences about our environmental challenges. By focusing on the ways in which hard science can be communicated in cultural, societal, and artistic terms, Alexander and others express hope that public engagement with these issues can be achieved. The symposium at NCTC is free and open to the public, but registration is required www.shepherd.edu/humanities . All keynote sessions will be streamed on Facebook Live .

'I Voted?' -- Oct. 18

Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017

8:00 am -- When we leave election booths, how sure can any of us really be these days that our votes will be counted -- and counted in the ways we intended? Thus the inclusion of a question mark in the title of a documentary film on U.S. election integrity, "I Voted?,"  that was screened and discussed recently at Shepherd University's Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education. It was the second in a series of events there focusing on voting issues. We'll be speaking with Jay Wyatt, Ph.D., Director of Programs and Research at Byrd, about glaring deficiencies in election security that activists say are often largely ignored -- and how we might go about fixing them.

Poem of the Week The Black Cat

Rainer Maria Rilke

A ghost, though invisible, still is like a place
your sight can knock on, echoing; but here
within this thick black pelt, your strongest gaze
will be absorbed and utterly disappear:

just as a raving madman, when nothing else
can ease him, charges into his dark night
howling, pounds on the padded wall, and feels
the rage being taken in and pacified.

She seems to hide all looks that have ever fallen
into her, so that, like an audience,
she can look them over, menacing and sullen,
and curl to sleep with them. But all at once

as if awakened, she turns her face to yours;
and with a shock, you see yourself, tiny,
inside the golden amber of her eyeballs
suspended, like a prehistoric fly.

Protecting our right to vote against Trump -- Sept. 27

Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017

8:00 am -- Joseph Cohen, Executive Director of the ACLU of West Virginia  < www.acluwv.org  >, will discuss the launch on Oct. 1 of ACLU's People Power, a nationwide grassroots mobilization aimed at protecting our fundamental right to vote. "Trump and his sham voter fraud commission are working to undermine confidence in our elections, and local and state legislators continue to target voting rights," says the ACLU. But "we're going to fight back."

The plan: organize THOUSANDS of grassroots events in communities across the U.S. beginning with the upcoming organizational session, say Cohen and other leaders. Make sure we're ready to fight back against attacks on our voting rights and pressure lawmakers to expand this fundamental pillar of our free society. And then, keep the pressure going. This isn't a one-day fight. You can start by clicking here: YES! I'll attend an event for People Power's Voting Rights campaign on Sunday, October 1st.

MAKE SURE EVERYONE YOU KNOW IS REGISTERED TO VOTE!

And by the way,  did you know that millions couldn't vote last year because of a voter registration deadline OR they didn't know how to register?  It's time to fix that! says an activist group, 18MillionRising.org

National Voter Registration Day is being observed this week -- on Tuesday, Sept, 26. By clicking here, you can register online. It'll only take two minutes and you'll be all set to vote in the November elections.

If you know someone who's  recently moved, changed their name, or haven't voted in recent elections, they need to update their voter registration! And of course, if they've recently become a citizen or turned 18, they need to register in order to vote. (Congratulations !)

Help make sure everyone you know is properly registered.

The Poetry Show -- 9/25/17 -- Odes, Vietnam and John Asbery.

Today we open with an appropriate ode, or two, from Pablo Neruda, and perhaps its earliest and some say best incarnations:  Pindar himself.

However, inspired by Ken Burns new historical review of the Vietnam war, we return to the poets of the Vietnam era: Denise Levertov, Gregory Corso, Steven Dobyns, William Stafford, Philip Levine and Allen Ginsberg, Amiri Baraka, Gil Scott Heron -- and Bob Dylan.

Last, a tribute to John Asbery and his wonderful, powerful, and impossible to explain poetic legacy.

Hello Friends and Broadcasters

After considerable labors -- and too much time -- the new Enlighten Radio Studio is up and running in Bolivar, West Virginia. Apologies to all for the delays. A number of factors, including illness, intervened to prolong reaching a stable and affordable infrastructure to the station.

But now, all our services are working, and prepared to amplify an innovative and progressive Internet community radio platform.

Internet Radio will become the dominant form of radio in the future as all environments, from home to office to transportation to even the near wilderness are increasingly Internet aware. Ease of use and access will gradually, but ineluctably, overtake terrestrial audio over the airwaves.

An essential feature of Internet Radio, contrasted with terrestrial, is its ability to provide CONTENT ON DEMAND, in addition to regularly scheduled programs. At the same time, audiences have nearly infinite choices in content whereas terrestrial radio restricts content to mostly local and regional environments and can rarely air content on demand.

These features impose some constraints as well as opportunities on broadcasting.

In line with this, here is an update on guidelines for both existing and future programs.

1. Please consult the calendar if you are interested in hosting your own program. Anywhere you see musical programming on the calendar, note that that is currently run via automation, meaning live programming can replace it during any hours the studio is open,  namely 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday - Friday. The studio is the Red Caboose Studio in Bolivar, West Virginia. Please contact me at host@enlightenradio.org for details.

2. Generally speaking, to be successful and accessible on demand, shows should be podcast and linked to a website and social media for elementary publicity. No publicity generally means no listeners. Podcasts should rarely exceed one hour in length.

3. Accordingly, the studio will provide 1 hour air time,  a raw audio mp3 file, but slightly edited for audio quality, and space on the station's podbean.com site (called "democracy road") for $20. In addition, for an additional $20, the studio can provide and create a website dedicated to your program, with custom styling and feel, under the enlightenradio.org domain . It will also provide minimal training on updating the site. However podcast refinement and publicity tasks beyond this are the host's responsibility.

4. Podcast files require a title and description (of arbitrary length) which the program hosts must provide before the file can be uploaded to Podbean for distribution.

5. The station supports up to 3 hosts/guests at one time, as well as cd\vinyl\tape\smart phone\computer device accessory sources.. We can also support call-ins via Skype, cell phones, or Google Talk.

6. Remote broadcasting and streaming. By arrangement, Talk shows, or other types can be remotely hosted and run via Skype. Cost is the same since production and streaming  must still be managed remotely.

7. COMING SOON, remote studio hosting. Minimal requirements for remote studio: Internet connected computer with decent sound card, microphone(s), sound board, headphones. This configuration would not require any additional streaming, podcasting or other accounts.
