7:30 Paris on the Potomac -- Shepherdstown, WV happenings

February 24, 2017

Notes from Gayle:

8:00 am:  Discussion will focus on an upcoming panel discussion at Shepherd University titled "Sick Behind Bars: The Ethics of the Incarceration of the Mentally Ill."  < Shepherd University | Common Reading Program to host death ... >  Joining us in a call from Silver Spring, Md., will be Richard C. Dieter, former executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center and one of the four panelists. The event, scheduled Thursday, March 2, at the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium, is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Shepherd University Common Reading Program, the George Washington Institute of Living Ethics, and the Shepherd University Foundation.

8:30 am:  We'll speak in the studio with Maria Allen, one of the organizers of an upcoming activist fair at Town Run Brewing Co., Shepherdstown..The event on Wednesday, March 1, 5:00 - 8:00 pm seeks to gather and coordinate the area's activist groups to raise awareness about Trump era threats to civil rights, the environment, and the Constitution. The "March First, Move Forward" event will showcase lots of volunteer opportunities, including many for those who have never before been engaged in civic action and are eager to get started. Find information on progressive issues and political candidates, and on new and existing organizations aimed at helping activists network, collaborate and avoid duplication of effort. (Note that the Fair is intended to highlight opportunities and resources for advocacy and civic engagement, in contrast to groups that provide social services only.) More information is available by contacting Allen at Mariastaqueria@gmail.com .   .Please bring your own table and have a representative there to describe your organization and answer questions. Also bring a sign-up sheet, printed material that includes information on how you can be contacted, and a display if possible. Allen said you’re also welcome to bring a donation jar.
