A Winners and Losers Special -- 10 AM Sunday -- Kevin Carden on the County Commission elections

The Winners and  Losers Radio Program has been on hiatus. The radio station has been undergoing substantial reconstruction.Expect its full return, but in a revolutionary new format, by the end of  May.

Today, however we host a special WL broadcast with Kevin Carden, Town Recorder for Harpers Ferry who is running for the County Commission in Jefferson County.

The situation in the County is a mess, especially since a gang of fools won 3 seats in the last round. Kevin will hopefully explain what's at stake for citizens in the up coming elections, primary and general.

Today, 10 AM. Go to and click on the player. Start listening.

California Explosion is STILL on deck, here in Almost Heaven Springtime West Virginia.

California Country, Storytelling and Recovery

Today begins the beginning of  countryside California, with Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, and Buck Owens leading the charge. Live recordings from the concerts vault. Plus a trip down the oft-forgotten paths of LA R&B from wayback. The Robins, The Flames, The Penguins, The Coasters, and more.

Not only that! The latest storytelling shows with Fanny and Stas, and powerful Recovery stories from James Boyd's recovery radio are in the 24/7 California Explosion rotation. Hopefully the new Whats Playing App will go live this week. Look for it on

California explosion part seis -- plus more!

Today begins the latest evolution of 24/7 California Explosion -- of live performances!

The Headliners:

  • Taj Mahal--Immigrating to Los Angeles in 1964, Henry Saint Clair Fredericks uses the stage name Taj Mahal, a self-taught singer-songwriter and film composer who plays the guitar, piano, banjo, and harmonica, among many other instruments. He incorporates elements of world music into his works and has done much to reshape the definition and scope of blues music over the course of his almost 50-year career.
  • Jackson Browne -- The southern california herald and Morpheus  of Melancholy -- Like Taj, a professional R & R singer-songwriter and bandman for nigh on 50 years.
  • Van Morrison -- This is a cheat, since Van lived in Fairfax, California only briefly a long time ago. But everything he says of Ireland is true of Northern California! The Los Angeles river sings a Celtic tune in the wet season. Hah
  • Keb' Mo'--Born in Compton, California --4-time Grammy winner and a(nother) major re-inventor of  the blues medium. From Papa John Creech till now, he has injected the blues into nearly every style of life and music, across the world. He finally gave up California and moved to Nashville. Oh well.

California Explosion Part Cinq -- Non-Stop Mac-Zappa -- and NEW STORYTELLING

Good morning everyone:

We proceed with the April California Explosion focusing on Fleetwood Mac and Frank Zappa for the next 48 hours.

Fleetwood Mac was born in London, but was reborn in Los Angeles to become one of the highest selling bands of all time. Enlighten Radio's live concert recordings include both pre and post the Buckingham/Nicks transformation from blues  to California Rock.

Frank Zappa -- no one speaks for Frank but Frank -- and there is an ocean of live recordings. Zappa was an LA immigrant, like many, and some of his origin in gritty Baltimore remained -- but Zappa belonged in California, and knew it.

At Noon today and Wednesday,  Fanny and Stas tell stories about Stephen Hawking, the famous scientist who passed away March 14.

Elvin Bishop -- born in Glendale -- a mile or so from where  I lived in Echo Park. A pre-Boomer, and classic guitarist for the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. ARG -- also coming up soon. We may not be able to cover california in just a month.

CAlifornia MOnth is Underway.

The bottomless collection of live recordings focuses on California for April. For the next 48 hours a marathon concert featuring BB King, Bonnie Raitt, and Boz Scaggs -- all either born in or adopted by California --- share the stage. Not only that, they appear in a fugue rotation, votexing 30 years of performance into a  sky of stars  worthy of William Blake -- California is the future, or there may not be one.

Also this week:

Storytelling with Fanny and Stas: Mondays at noon.
